August 5 - by Emma

Today when we woke up we had pancakes and they were really good.  Next we went swimming until a woman came up to us and said we had to get out of the pool because we weren't with a parent.  After the lady kicked us out of the pool we went to go and take a shower.  After the shower we drove to a clinic and got my bumps checked out.  The wait was 2 hours, and in that time we were able to go shopping and get some lunch.  For lunch we went to a pizza place and got a really good pizza.  When I got my bumps on my arm and leg checked out the lady gave me pills and some cream.  This is the first time in my life that I have had to swallow pills!!!  When we were done at the Wal-Mart we drove to the campsite at Shenandoah National Park.  When we got there we ate some dinner and then we went to bed.

Today we went to the Visitors Center and got our JR Ranger books

Today we woke up when Emma was really grumpy.  For the first part of the morning, we relaxed and hung out.  Then, we rode our bikes to the Visitors Center and did the part of our JR Ranger books that we could.  We did not stay too long, so after that we went back to the RV and did math.  All of the sudden weญญญญญญญ heard people screaming BEAR!!!! So we went outside and saw an 18 month year old bear sniffing our bikes which were right outside of the RV!  We found out that this was a "teenager" bear that was just rejected by its mother so that she could have new babies.   The way that the mother leaves the baby is by bluff charging at it and grunting and snorting at it.  It is sort of a sad processญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญ because all of the sudden the mother just tells the bear that he is not wanted anymore, but that is just a day in the life of a bear.  When I saw the bear the rangers were shooting rubber bullets and paintball guns to try to make the bear scared of people.  I heard that the bear tried to break into the lodge earlier today. I felt sad for the bear because he looked really sad, and he was going through a hard time, and right in the middle of his personal crisis the rangers surround him, point rubber and paintball guns at him, and they throw rocks towards him.  Poor scared bear!  Then we went back to the RV and went to a ranger program about baby animals.  On the way there we had a skinny cow drumstick, Mmmmm!  After that we went to bed.  I had a good day.

August 7 - by Madison

Today was our last day in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia.  We decided to go on a hike to Lewis Falls since it is supposed to be a very pretty waterfall.  When we started the hike Emma started complaining that her legs and arms were itchy, so we had to put her skirt in “pigtails”, or tie the sides up so they didn’t rub against her legs.  I thought that it looked funny because her skirt had pigtails and it looked like she was hiking in a tight skirt.  I thought that the hike there was really boring because all we saw were plants and trees, which I can see in my backyard.  When we got to the waterfall we were disappointed because it was just a line of dripping water.  We had Verizon reception here, so we called my Mom and my Dad checked his email.  After we left the falls we hiked back to the campground.  I think that the hikes on the east coast were fun because the weather was cooler, but the hikes on the west coast were a lot more scenic.  When we got back to the RV we ate lunch and then rode our bikes to the visitor center.  When we got there we went to a ranger program about walking slow and looking for different animals.  We found butterflies, spiders, millipedes, stinkbugs, a walking stick, birds, moths, milkweed bugs and one that we didn’t know the name to.  My Dad found most of the animals, and we were glad that he did because the ones that he found were the coolest.  My favorite animal was the one that we didn’t know the name to because it looked very interesting, it had a turtle like shell, 6 legs, pinchers, antennas, a body that looked shrimp like, and it had a pointy shell.  The ranger didn’t know the name of it so we made up our own, and mine was the Rock Bug because it looked like a pebble when it was still.  After the ranger program we went back to the RV, ate dinner and then made s’mores.  I had a fun day in Shenandoah looking for bugs and hiking.
