July 16 - by Emma

Today we went to a fort called Fort Smith on the border of Oklahoma and Arkansas. There we learned about the fort and what it was used for.  I learned that this fort was originally built to make stop 2 Indian tribes from fighting at a time when the US was trying to move the Indians from the East Coast out west.  The President was thinking that if 2 Indian tribes were fighting, then they would never get the Indians to move to the west.  The reason why they wanted the Indian tribes to move to the west was because the Europeans wanted to move on the land were the Indians lived.  What finally got the Indians to move to the west was that the US Government promised them that if they moved west, they would never take away you land once they got there.  The only thing the Indians had to do know was walk or ride there horse to the west, which was 1,000 miles away from there homes.   They were doing this walk in the winter so they were really cold and didn't have a lot food.  Many people died on that trail so know it is called the "Trail of Tears."  Only a few years after the Indians settled in the west, the Europeans started to move west as well in search of gold, so many of the Indians had their home taken away even though the Government said they would not get there home taken away once they moved.  When Fort Smith wasn’t being used for the Indians anymore, the Government built more houses, and it was used as a supply depot.  Once the gold rush was over, the buildings were turned into courtrooms and a jail.  When we got to Fort Smith we went in the visitors center and got our Junior Ranger books, and then we went on a short 1 mile hike to see the old buildings.  These buildings were not standing, and most of the walls had eroded away.  When we were done the hike we went to the RV and got our vests before we went in the visitors center got our Junior Ranger badge.  Once we were done, we drove to a campsite that was on the Arkansas River.  When we got there we had some dinner and went to bed.

Today we had a really relaxing day.  The first thing that we did was ate breakfast.  Next we did some math on IXL. When we were done the IXL I read until I got hungry.  When my dad came back from fishing and he got me lunch, which was a bagel with peanut butter and Jelly.  Next I did another IXL and that was the last IXL in fourth grade math!!!!!  When I was done the IXL we watched an episodes of H2o.  Then we had some dinner. For dinner we had Ramen Noodles with eggs, salad, with grapes.  Then my Dad and I went out on the kayak for a ride along the Arkansas where he was kayaking earlier.  When we got back we took a shower, watched a movie, and then we went to bed.
