July 10 - by Madison

Today I woke up with a piece of sand in my eye. My Dad tried to get it out with water, but that didn't work.  We decided to drive to the visitor center at Great Sand Dunes and have a Ranger look at it.  The Ranger took me into the first aid room and flushed my eye out with water, but that didn’t work either.  It was not bothering me too much, so we decided to do what we were originally planning to do and drive out of Colorado and into Wichita, Kansas.  On the way we stopped at a National Monument called Old Bent’s Fort National Monument, Colorado.  There we got our junior ranger books and walked around the fort.  I learned that this fort was built here in the 1830’s, and it was built here because it was on the Santa Fe Trail, the route that took you back to the east coast, and because there were buffalo hunters and Indians to trade with.  I thought that it as a good idea to build it here because the settlers coming from or going to the east coast would probably stop here to buy or trade stuff.  My favorite part of the fort was the blacksmith shop because we watched a ranger make a hanger, and that could be used for hanging tools. After we looked through the fort we continued the drive to Wichita.  While we were driving we saw a Walmart that had an eye vision center.  I didn’t see the doctor, but they told me what to get which was an eye bath.   We did that and then continued driving, and after about an hour we passed into Kansas.  While we were in the car we passed cow farms,  and the manure was so stinky!  We passed farm after farm, and the smells got worse and worse.  We had to go to bed, but my Dad was going to keep driving until he got tired.  I had a relaxing day and I hope that I can get the piece of sand out of my eye tomorrow.
