July 7 - by Emma

Today we went to Florissant Fossil Beds NM in Colorado. This park is nothing like dinosaur NM because there are only plant, and bug fossils here!   When we got to this park we went in the visitor's center to get our JR books.  This ranger station was not big at all because this was just a temporary visitor’s center.  The next thing we did was walk around looking at all of the petrified wood.  This petrified wood was formed differently than in Theodore Roosevelt NPS. This is how the petrified wood was formed here:

-             - About 35 million years ago there was a forest of redwood trees, and a river that went through it.

             - One day there was a volcano erupted causing all of the redwood trees to die

             - After that there were a few more volcanos that erupted so the redwood trees were covered with ash. Also, there was so much volcanic ash the river got dammed up, and replaced with a lake.

             - Millions of years later most of the ash was eroded away so you can see the petrified wood.

After we were done looking we went to a ranger program. There I learned that there was a man that used to live here, and he knew about the petrified redwood trees.  This man really wanted to see the redwood trees, but they were all covered with a rock called cap rock.  Cap rock is just like cement, so he didn’t know how he was going to get to the petrified wood.  He tried to break the cap rock with some of his tools, but that didn’t work out.  One day he was starting to become more and more impatient so he got a peace of dynamite to blow up the cap rock! That plan worked, but the top of the redwood was starting to crumble.  Years later this became a national monument, so they put metal rings around the trees to keep them from crumbling.  Then we went to a picnic table to have some lunch.  After that we went in the visitor’s center to get our JR badge and patch, and finally we drove to Adeline house.  Adeline was a homesteader here, and she had over 160 acers!  There I saw a bat that flew out of her pantry!  Then we drove to town, and on the way we stopped at Wal-Mart to get some fruit.   When we got to the town my mom bought some caramel popcorn.  After we ate the caramel popcorn we walked around the town. On the way we stopped at a spring that had carbonated water, and the water tasted really good.   In the town we went in a lot of shops, and when it was dinner time we went to a restaurant.  Next we drove back to the RV, read a bit, and then we went to bed.
