June 27 – by Emma

Today we drove from Arches National Park to Colorado National Monument. When we got there we went in the Visitors Center to get our junior ranger books, and then we went back to the RV to have some lunch.  We then drove to some trailheads.  It was ten degrees cooler in Colorado than it was at Arches, so it was much easier to hike!  The first hike that we did was called Cokes Ovens, and that hike was only 1 mile.  Since we were hiking my Dad gave us a cherry powder to put in our drinks that made my lips so red!  We saw a really pretty canyon when we got to the bottom, but it wasn't prettier than the Grand Canyon.  Also we saw a smoke that was coming from a fire from one of the many fires that are currently burning in Colorado.  One fire has already burned 200 houses in Colorado Springs.    I feel really bad for all the people that lost their houses in the fire because now they have to live somewhere else.  I asked my Dad and we are going to make a donation to help them!  Then we went to another trailhead which was called Otto’s trail.  That trail was also not very long, and I didn’t like this viewpoint as much because you couldn’t see as many rock formations.  We then hiked back up, and when we got to the RV we drove to the visitor’s center and we got our JR badge.  This was a special JR because it was out 100th  Junior Ranger!!!!!!  From there we drove to our campsite which was a little way out of the park, and when we got there we ate dinner.   We then read a little and relaxed, and after that we went to bed.  We are looking forward to going back into Utah tomorrow to visit Dinosaur National Monument.

June 27 - by Ryan (girls older cousin, who just completed 7th grade in June)

Today when I woke up, everybody started to secure things so we could start our drive out of the Moab campsite. We were driving to Fruita, Colorado which was about 2 hours. When we arrived we went to the Visitors Center for the Colorado National Monument. Madison, Katelyn, Emma, and I looked around the little store and got out Junior Ranger books. The Junior Ranger books are full of activities such as crossword puzzles, fill in the blanks, and coloring pages. Once you finish them all you go back to the Visitors Center and get your Junior Ranger badge.

For a while we worked on our Junior Ranger books and looked around the little museum in the building. We all watched two 12 minute videos in the auditorium. One was a picture video and the other was a geology video. They were SO boring. So, we left the auditorium and worked on the activities again. We then left in the RV for two short hikes that we were going to do. The first short hike was called Coke Ovens.  It was a mile walk roundtrip. Before we left for the hike we all got little packets to flavor our waters with. It was cherry flavor. Yum!

It didn't take long to get there at all. Once we all arrived there was a cliff that was fenced up. We looked over and there were many beautiful rock formations. On the walk back Uncle Mike was throwing rocks over our heads and they would smash down in front of us. At first it freaked us all out because we didn’t know what it was. We found out it was him and we all laughed. Soon, Emma started throwing rocks also. She didn’t exactly have great control over her throwing. One rock that she threw went literally went less than an inch by my ear! Ha ha. Yeah, not so much. I was just trying to live in the moment of still having my ear.

Once we got back to the RV we really got a good look at Emma. The drink we got had stained her lips bright red. It was all turning flakey and peeling off. She looked like a really funny lady that we saw at the Arches Visitor Center. The woman had very bad lipstick that peeled all of her lips. The last hike was called Otto’s Trail. It was a quarter mile each way. At the end was a look out area where you could see more rock formations. Shortly after it we drove to out campsite. Guess what?!? There was A/C there!!! But it would have been okay if there wasn’t because it was 10 degrees cooler than Arches. It was like HEAVEN ON EARTH!!! Madison, Katelyn, Emma, and I took showers! I felt clean for the first time in a few days! The showers were sooo nice. For dinner we had Mac and Cheese, French fries, and chicken. Oh, yeah, and salad for the vegetarians.

After dinner the girls and I played some board games. We played Set, Sequence, and Scrabble. I lost BAD in Set. Figures, the girls play it all the time. I won Sequence. Yay me! But lost again at Scrabble. Uncle Mike told us that tomorrow we were going to go to Dinosaur National Park. It was back in Utah. The drive was going to be 3 hours.  So he said that he was going to leave early while we were all sleeping. He wouldn’t be able to drive with the couch pulled out so I need to sleep in the back bed with Madison. Today was a good day and I can’t wait to go see those dinosaur bones!
