Today was mostly a driving day. We were driving to Death Valley where it is going to be 115 degrees!! I was not really excited, because I wasn't in the mood to be really hot. On the drive I felt like we were going to the middle of nowhere.
We were also going uphill a LOT, and one time we climbed 1,000 feet in three minutes. When we finally got to the visitors center I was cooled off a lot because we were in the shade, and there was air conditioning. Then we went to the fount desk to get our junior ranger book. Next we hopped in the RV, and drove to a campsite. At the campsite there was a pool!!! When we went in the water of the pool it felt really refreshing because it comes from a natural spring. Then we took a shower, and went back to the RV to eat dinner.
After we were done dinner we went to the lowest point in the US where there was a huge salt bed. It looked like a big field of snow. The salt tasted really bad, but Madison and Katelyn said it was good. We watched the sunset which was really cool. Finally we went back to the campsite and went swimming one last time since it was still 95 degrees in the dark.
We finally got to bed quite late. May 20 – by Katelyn
Today we hung out at Death Valley
Today I had to wake up pretty early because we were going to walk on the sand dunes, and if you go later than 10:00 you will burn your feet. I really liked going to the sand dunes because I climbed the tallest dune. On the way up I was still a little bit tired because it was still 7:00, but after a little bit I woke up. I was the first one that made it up to the biggest sand dune. Being first made me proud because I always come in last, when it comes to physical things.
At the top of the dune I had a really great view of an Indian Reservation and all of the littler sand dunes. Once the sun started coming up a little higher in the sky Dad said that we had to go back to the RV because the sand was starting to get a little hot. The way back was a lot worse because the sun was out, and it was really hot out.
When we finally made it back to the RV we drove to a canyon. At the canyon we went on a hike. In the beginning of the hike I thought that it was really cool because I was walking in the actual path where a river once flowed. I thought this was so cool because the river made the path, not the rangers. When I looked at the side of the wall it was really cool because I could see all of the layers of sediment. One really cool thing about the sediment in the canyon is that it is made out of rocks and clay, whereas in the other places that we have seen sediment it was made out of shells and clay.
You can really notice the difference of the two kinds of sediment because the rock sediment had bigger clusters then the shell sediment. Towards the end of the hike I got a little bit grumpy because I just really wanted to get back to the RV because the heat was making me tired. Once we got back to the RV we went to the Visitors Center and got sworn in as JR Rangers. Then we went to the pool and played for a little bit.
Next we went to watch the solar eclipse. The solar eclipse was really exciting because I had never seen anything like it in my life, and the whole background of a solar eclipse is really interesting. When I was watching the solar eclipse I saw the moon slowly coming in front of the sun and I saw the sun getting smaller and smaller.
The solar eclipse was a little bit boring, but it was also exciting. It was boring because the moon was going so slowly. After the solar eclipse we started driving to Las Vegas. After that we went to bed. I had a busy day today.
