April 19 - by Katelyn

Today I went to Fort Davis

Today I woke up not feeling very good. Next I decided to go outside to get a breath of fresh air.  After I went outside I felt much better.  Then we drove over to Fort Davis.  At Fort Davis we got a JR Ranger book that we underrated.  Once we got that we went outside to see Fort Davis.  Fort Davis is not like some of the forts that we usually go to, that are used for war, but this fort was protecting people on the westward expansion. The Fort was renovated three times, by two different groups of people.  The first time it was renovated was when the houses were made out of wood and straw, and the people made it better by changing the buildings to brick and shingles.  The second time it was worked on was after the original owners of the fort abandoned it, and there was work done on the hospital.  After that they built enlisted quarters for the people at the fort.  At the fort we went to many different buildings including the General's kitchen, the Generals house, the magazine, the hospital, the store, and the jail.  My favorite place was the General’s house because it was really fancy.  One funny thing that happened when we were at the fort was when we were going back to the visitors center and we saw two goats and two horses escape, and one of the goats was walking on the ruins of the jail where a sign read: "stay off - fragile!" One really interesting fact is that back then, at the time that the fort was used, the doctors working at the hospital gave a little bit of poison to some sick patients thinking that it would make them feel better.  After we saw the whole fort, we went back to the RV and drove 3 hours to Carlsbad, New Mexico.  Driving to New Mexico was really exciting because we were driving out of the east side of Texas, which I did not enjoy too much.  After we got to Carlsbad, New Mexico we went to a Wal-Mart.  Then we ate dinner, watched a movie and went to bed.  I had a great day.
