Louisville, KY

(by Katelyn)

Today we went to the Louisville Slugger museum and factory, which is located in Louisville, Kentucky.  There, we went on a tour that told us how a baseball bat is made.  I learned that 1.8 million bats are made in this factory every year.  Another thing that I learned is that they start off with big chunks of wood for each bat.  The wood chunks get sanded down until it is in the form of a bat.  The hard thing about doing this when they make bats for the professional players is that they normally have to make 6 bats that are exactly the same size, shape, and color.  One last thing that I learned is that to make the bat not splinter when the player is hitting, they put it in a glaze that gives it a fine finish.  After the tour, we were each given a 'mini' bat.

We then went to watch a movie about baseball and the bats.  It explained that you need to concentrate and focus to be a good player.  My favorite part of the day came when we then went to the batting cages to try out some of the bats.  I was really scared, but everyone else was also.  I told myself that they would not make something that would hurt us, so I offered to go first again.  When I got in I had so much fun!  I got 10 pitches and I hit 6 of them.  When we were all done in the cages, we went to get our engraved bat.  It looks really good.

Next we drove to an Irish Fest in another part of Louisville.  I loved it there so much.  There I made a really pretty ring.  After that we ate some breaded fish.  It was super good!  I then went back to the ring place and looked some more.  We then walked around the fest a looked at all of the tables.  I really liked all of the Irish music that they played, and it reminded me of Irish Dancing.  We all got matching orange shirts that had an Irish symbol on it and the information on the back.

We then went back to the RV and took a shower and got ready for bed.  I had a great day!
