Thomson, IL on the Mississippi River

(by Katelyn)

Today we are in Illinois, and camping right on the Mississippi River.  We took our bikes on the Illinois Bike Trail with a goal of riding 50 miles.  It was super fun!  When I first started I did not think that I would make it, but eventually I did.

In the beginning it was super pretty.  I liked it because there was long grass around me.  After a while, it turned into trees which I did not like as much because there were lots of bugs that flew into my eyes.  Then we had to ride on the road of a short part.  I did not like it because I had to stay all the way over to the side and there were cars.  After a while we came up to an awesome playground in Albany, IL.  At the playground we went on some slides, the monkey bars, and the swings.  We had fun while we ate a snack.  When we left we had to go up a really steep hill.  It was so steep that it looked like it was going straight up.  Once I got to the top my legs were so tired!  However, once I got them moving again they started to feel a lot better.  After that we were on a very long trail that had a road on 1 side and the Mississippi River on the other.  We rode and rode, and finally got to the 25 mile mark, which was half way!  We took some pictures and I felt so happy.

We turned around and started to go back.  It felt so good knowing that we were getting closer, not farther away, to the RV.  Since we went on the same trail on the way back, everything looked the same.  It all looked so familiar that it felt like I had done the ride 200 times before!  When we came to the train tracks we had to wait a long time for a very ling train to pass.  When we got to about 45 miles, we stopped to get ice cream to celebrate.  We were all very happy.  We rode the final 5 miles fast, and once I got back to the RV I put my hands in the air.

Today I learned that I can do things that I haven't done before or don't think I can do if I work hard.  I had a great day!

Hi guys,
I wish I could see Yellowstone again. What was your favorite part about Yellowstone? We were there two years ago and mine was West Thumb Geyser Basin Trail. How long did it take you to ride fifty miles along the Mississippi River? Great job!!!!
