Minuteman Missile National Monument, South Dakota

(by Katelyn)

Today I went to the Minuteman Missile National Monument.  This location is important because when we built up our missiles the Soviets knew that if they fired their missiles at us first, then we would fire back at them.  Because nobody wanted to start launching the missiles first, nobody ever did it.  It was called a 'cold war'.  A cold war is not a war where there is fighting, but there is talking.  The war went on for 16 years.  The reason for this war was the Soviet government was communist, and the American government was democratic, and each feared that the other would become stronger and make more countries join their side.

The USA decided to name their new missile the Minuteman because at the time the war was going on Domino's Pizza could deliver the pizza to you in 30 minutes or less.  So, they said that if Domino's could deliver a pizza in 30 minutes, then they could deliver their missiles to the Soviet Union in 30 minutes.  The US had their missiles pointed at the Soviet Union's Army bases.

We went on a tour around the minute man missile facility.  On the tour we learned how the people would work on a regular day.  One thing that I learned was that they got their signal from a 120 foot antenna under the ground.  Another thing that I learned is that to launch a missile you need to have 2 people because there are 2 keys with slots 12 feet away from each other, and the keys need to be turned at the same time.  One last thing that I learned was that they had special cars to drive that got up to 120 degrees inside them because the metal was so thick.  It is funny because the cars have air conditioning, but it would make the cars engine overheat so they could not use it.  After the tour drove for 4 hours into Nebraska.  I had a great day learning about the Cold War.
