Mackinac City, MI

We awoke today to overcast skies, so I checked the forecast to see the outlook, which looked quite bad!  At 7am the hourly forecast showed heavy rain coming in at 1pm and lasting for 2 days.  Our plan was to relax a bit today and perhaps go into Mackinac City, and then take the ferry to Mackinac Island tomorrow.  Mackinac Island is most famous because automobiles were banned on the Island in 1898, so the primary mode of transportation includes bikes, horses, and feet.  Rain, however, seriously puts this plan in jeopardy!  I was bummed because I really wanted to take the girls on a bike ride around Mackinac Island.  The girls were still sleeping and I was debating options, which were somewhere between not good and bad!  The challenge is that we need to ride our bikes 2 miles to the ferry, then take a 30 minute ferry ride, then ride 8 miles around the island, and then return.  As I debated the options for about 30 minutes, I rechecked the forecast and now the heavy rain was pushed out until 3pm, so I sprung into action!

I drug the girls out of bed at 8am, much to their surprise since I told them they could sleep in and they relax today.  I explained the weather situation, and they agreed that we would make a run for it.  They were great...they ate while I unloaded the bikes from the RV.  We all got dressed and we packed our rain gear.   We were outside at 9am and rode our bikes to the ferry in time to purchase tickets and board the 9:30 ferry.

We arrived on the island at 10am, and spend a little time lingering on Main Street, which is lined with about as many fudge shops as you could ever see in a 1 mile strip!  I was honestly in shock at how many there were, and every one seemed to have someone standing outside offering a sample.  Emma was in her own little part of heaven...Walking down Main Street with everyone offering her fudge!  I got them out of town quickly with the promise that I would get them lunch and a candy treat if we made it around the Island with no complaining...and we were off!

We had a really good ride.  The weather was somewhat cool in the low 60's, but there was no rain!  With several stops we completed the 8 mile loop in about 90 minutes.  Our longest stop was at Arch Rock, plus a few others along the rock beaches of Lake Huron.   As usual, Emma led the way on the bike, motivated by the thought of all the fudge that waited on Main Street.  I pulled up the rear, along with Katelyn for most of the way, enjoying the sights and discussing the nature.

We had a nice lunch and walked down Main Street sampling the fudge for a second time.  Then, almost without warning the skies opened up and it just poured rain.  We waited a bit, and finally made a run for our bikes, and then to the ferry.   We made it back for the 3:30 ferry, and were fortunate to have a break in the rain when we arrived back in Mackinac City at about 4pm.  We quickly make the 2 mile ride back to the campground, and felt fortunate to have accomplished much of what we originally planned.

Going back to the fudge shop discussion: when I got back to the RV I Googled "most fudge shops", and can you guess what came up?  You guessed it:  Mackinac Island!!  I got a good laugh out of this!  Try it for yourself...
