Our next stop was Karratha. We had an additional interest in getting to Karratha. Wally Mason, son-in-law of our great friends Kath and Con Harty  has been working on the Pluto liquefied natural gas plant for the Woodside North West Shelf for the last 3 months. It was great to catch up with him, still seems odd that the last time we saw Wally was in Ballarat and now here we are the other side of the country meeting up again.
Wally invited us to dinner at his camp at Gapridge Village. I am not sure what we expected but we were blown away by the facilities. The village houses 2000 people. The sleeping quarters known as "dongas" stretch for as far as you can see. The mess was a huge smorgasboard area, immaculately clean, the food was fantastic  and all you could eat. Ray and I chose roast beef and both agreed it was the best roast beef we had ever eaten. We managed to squeeze in sweets, again a huge display to choose from. The entire village is so clean and soooo big. There is a huge "wet" mess where you can go for drinks and watch TV.
Thanks Wally, a fantastic experience and a great night.
The Woodside operated North West Shelf venture represents Australia's largest resource development and one of the world's largest producers of gas.
Dampier, 20kms from Karratha provides the facilities for the Dampier Salt operations.
Ray and I both agreed we have learnt more about Australia in the last 7 weeks than we have in our entire lives.

Hi Wendy & Ray, I'm glad you enjoyed your visit with Wally. He also enjoyed seeing you guys as you are the only ones he has seen from home up there. Might have saved a bit of home sickness for him. You both look great! See ya

Yes, it was great catching up with Wally. All the way you meet people who come from down our way or know someone in the area but it is certainly good to catch up with someone you know. xxx
