Where I stayed
We have left the stately Clifton Inn for the significantly less impressive Red Roof Inn in Asheville, North Carolina. Memories we will keep from our time in the Virginias include the advertisement for the state fair contest on the radio - the cook-off was for the best mac and cheese made with any variety of SPAM - and the fellow from the swimming hole who told Mike that when his uncle saw snakes on the road, he picked them up and put them in his coveralls pocket and took them home to get rid of the mice. Apparently the man had never heard of cats?
And we have no good news to report on the ring: on the way here, we called around to see if the ring had turned up at any of the places we stayed, but sadly it had not.
Asheville is cute - basically a hippie-filled mountain town. Our Red Roof is a bit outside of the heart of the city, and Emily, our GPS voice, initially led us a half-hour astray before correctly guiding us to where we wanted to go. Unfortunately, there is no way to punish her.
