What you see from the train between NY and Washington is pretty dismal - mostly industrial areas of decaying brick buildings, power plants, empty lots.  Going through Newark NJ you get a view of the Passaic River that is tragic.  It just looks so polluted and full of garbage.  I've never gotten a look at that river from the road when going through Newark.  Supposedly, it is improving and some efforts are being made to clean it.  It certainly doesn't look like it.  There was a chemical plant that manufactured Agent Orange for the War in Vietnam in the 60's and 70's that dumped dioxin and other pollutants into it.

In the heavily populated areas of the Northeast, the neighborhoods along the railroad tracks are where nobody wants to live, but some people have to live. It is getting dark now.  The train is quite full.  There are many holiday travelers returning home from their Thanksgiving holiday.  The conductor says the train is overbooked and some passengers will have to sit in the lounge/dining car.  I'm glad on got on the first station in NY and got a nice window seat and a handy electrical outlet.  I am set !!!!  There is a nice lady sitting next to me who was visiting her fiancee in Delaware.  She is going back to Meridian, MS, so we will be seat mates for quite some time.

Hi Mike!
That's so sad about the river. I hope the scenery improves tomorrow. Enjoy the conversation on the train!

I actually had just thought of your journey. I am watching a movie called "cloud atlas" and there are a few beautiful scenes of a train traveling through Europe.

It's an interesting scify. I may read the book. (I believe that is a bit backwards) but as I am learning there's quite a few great scify movies based off books.

Enjoy the rest of your journey!!

Sounds very interesting so far! Definitely enjoy the strange company. I hope the scenery improves for you soon. Although I'm sure that the good/bad contrast will do wonders for your writing!
