Our room was quiet and comfortable, so we awoke well rested. In addition, it offers a complimentary breakfast buffet (as well as an ice machine)-we packed up our breakfasts in the cooler and had another early morning picnic, this time at Carnifax Ferry State Park. We hiked the Patterson Trail-beautiful overlooks.
Our plan was to stop at the Cranberry Glade Botanical Center but it's only open fours day each week-not today. We definitely enjoyed continuing our drive along the Scenic Bypass in the National Forest and stopped along it for a lunch picnic, this time on an overlook over the Williams River. Again, there was a nearby trailhead, so we followed it a short way. It was rocky but an easy climb- it would definitely be worth taking more time there,
Our final park stop was a great place whose name I don't remember and can't find!*** It was basically a camping area with a few picnic sites-we enjoyed one of those. The road wasn't great (mostly gravel) and there didn't seem to be a swimming spot, so I was a bit surprised that there were quite a few people there. We took a short hike along the Meat Box Run Trail-a steep start that leveled off.
We then drove on into Cumberland, Maryland, arriving at the Slumberland Motel around 9:00. We got a good-sized room with a king-sized bed- nicely furnished (it would be very comfortable to stay here several nights). It's on a narrow strip between the highway and interstate but the noise isn't bad, probably because of trees and the creek that runs along the back of the property blocking some noise. A good find.
*** After a little research, I think I found it! I think we were at Kumbrabow State Forest, near-ish to Elkton-- definitely a worthwhile stop.
