Where I stayed
WEATHER: very warm, humid, light evening shower.
TOTAL MILEAGE: 19.8 miles
Breakfast at the McDonald's near Plaza Magdelena- 19Q for two.
My Spanish lesson went well- Helmut feels we can incorporate more conversation, so it's more interesting . Both he and Dalila (the director of the school) told us that insurance is not required in Guatemala except for new cars- comforting, since it doesn't seem that we're going to get it anyway.
We decided to try a new hotel, so we checked into the Alcazar de Dona Victoria, which has a location close to a market and not far from the central park (but, like almost everything in Coban, a steep uphill climb is required to walk there). It has a dramatic courtyard and garden, and all the common spaces are filled with plants and statues. The woodwork and hardware has a medieval look, so the place has something of the feel of a castle. There is parking in the courtyard and a hotel restaurant. Our room was tiny, literally, filled by the bed with almost no room to spare. The bathroom was a good size but there was nearly no hot water. There is no air conditioning but there is TV with cable. Unfortunately, the hotel was filled with a loud, rude tour group. I liked spending time in the beautiful exterior areas and we did get some rest, but, for about 300Q, the value wasn't there.
Dinner at the Cafe Coban, quite a good restaurant on the park; I liked my "tropical hamburger", which had barbecue sauce and pineapple (for both of us, dinner came to 83Q).
