My main goal for Hawaii is to take it easy--see how the baby handles the heat and how Julie handles the baby handling heat. Normally a More is More traveller, this laid back attitude draws on some rarely exploited part of my cranium. The transformation is helped by the fact I enveloped Oahu on a trip 18 months ago. Still, I have 5 things on my To Do list for the week:
1) get inside the always closed, always tantalizing Lai Fong Department store, whose contents seem to have collected since the 1920s;
2) watch some of the Vans Triple Crown surf competition on the North Shore;
3) obtain some decent Hawaiian music;
4) hike the northwest corner at Kaena Point, about as far as one can get from Waikiki;
5) visit the Bishop Museum, reported not only to have a mind-boggling Hawaiian collection, but also currently exhibiting a great travelling show (done by the awesome Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago) called simply "Chocolate". This interests me.

It turns out that none of these experiences will come to pass for the week. We get into a kind of Do Nothing groove which would normally freak me out, but which rolls duck-like off the proverbial back. I mean, I do have another 10 weeks of travel left....

The most adventurous we get on Saturday is a swim in the pool and a drive to Waikiki to watch "The Hulk" at Sunset on the Beach, a travelling outdoor movie project. Trained by Victoria's climate, we bring along vests and a blanket, none of which we need in the warm night wind. People watch comfortably in their swimsuits.

The drive back to Kailua is an easy 35 minutes at this time of night, and we're in bed by ten thirty.
