Where I stayed
Boulder Inn & Suites
This town is so durn cute. Because I live in New York City, I love small towns and for a vacation, I much prefer a small town to a big city.
Hoover Dam is located in Boulder City, Nevada which is like an hour from Las Vegas. The town has a few really nice, classic, independently-owned, coffee shops.
The restaurant Le Bistro was very nice. The friendly waitress there cooked too. Le Bistro seemed to be a place where the locals hung out.
But if you go to Las Vegas, you must go to Hoover Dam. It should be a Wonder of the World. Not only is the engineering feat of holding back a river fairly spectacular, but the design gestalt of the place pretty amazing - the art deco columns, the story high angels guarding the dam. The little 1950s style museum. Lovely.
I did not go down into to the dam to see how it works. I had hoped to make it to the South end of the Grand Canyon in the afternoon. But it was raining and the entrance to the Grand Canyon was closed. So I drove there and back (in like 4 hours) and stayed at the Boulder Inn and Suites in Boulder City. I stayed there because it had a pool, but it was a bit chilly in the pool.
I didn't want to go back to Vegas. I like the small town. I like it a lot.
