Tuesday morning it was time to push farther north. The state of Connecticut had other ideas.  It seems they forgot to put a northbound ramp from our hotel.  I needed one the day before and figured I just missed it when I went to Mystic.  I was wrong.  It seems the state of Connecticut did not find it important for people living/staying in this area to go north.  Everyone has to go south even if they want to go north.  So either Connecticut wants everyone to go south or it has something to do with the Wal-mart that was a block away.

Once we were pointed north everything went fairly well.  A couple of small traffic jams in the Boston area but nothing unexpected or long lasting.  In fact once we hit the Maine border I actually, for the first time in my life, enjoyed driving on I-95.  The traffic was light.  Everyone seemed to understand highway driving etiquette; cars wanting to do the speed limit in the right hand lane, those of us wishing to further test the limits of President Eisenhower's highway system in the left lane.  Highway driving the way it is supposed to be.  No one in MY way.

We arrived in Bar Harbor a little before 5 and went to the hotel where the clerk greeted us.  She was as nice as I am sarcastic and a wealth of information.  For instance; her son is a cop in one of the little towns around here, he is 6’4", 360, and has been on the job for 15 years.  She also told us a bunch of good info about Bar Harbor including our dinner location.

We dropped our bags and headed for the Chart Room.  The view was spectacular, the food excellent, and the adult beverage had blueberries.  I don’t normally order beer with fruit in it.  As I outlined before fruit is best served in flaky crust, with lots of cinnamon, sugar and whipped cream.  But this is the land of lobsters and blueberries so I figure when in Maine do as a …. Mainenite?  I have to say the beer was pretty good.  I did not taste any blueberries but the beer was good.  In fact it was good enough that I ordered a second one.  Had I been within walking/stumbling distance of the hotel it may not have stopped there.

Dinner over, it was time to go into Bar Harbor and scope it out.  It took us a few minutes to find a parking space but the time spent was well worth it.  In the hour or so we were downtown we booked a whale/puffin watching boat trip for Friday, bought a $45 jacket for Sarah for $20, watched ships come into port and ate … guess the fruit in the ice cream? That’s right, blueberry.

Tomorrow we are off  to the highest point on the east coast for some hiking and other site seeing adventures.  Enjoy the pictures of our first night in Bar Harbor.

Blueberry Beer? Two of my favorite items in one beverage.

This, I must put on my list to try.
