June 3 - Alexandria, Egypt
History lesson - Alexandria is known as "The Peal of the Mediterranean" - I'll talk about that later. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC (thats important) Alexandria also had the world's best library, containing thousands of texts collected from every known continent. Lastly, Egypt commanded two Wonders of the Ancient world - the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Pharos Lighthouse!
So, I researched dive sites - The Pharos Lighthouse is under the sea, destroyed (but cool to dive). Also, Cleopatras City - an archeological underwater city. So I emailed (twice) a dive company with no response. Must be telling me something.
Next - the library! The original was destroyed in the 4th Century AD, but a new one was built near the old site and on campus. The good Doctor and I set out for the library, with him doing the haggling for a taxi. The library was huge. I'm thinking GM Place (maybe not quite). Very modern. Very clean. Tons of young students.
Our taxi driver was waiting for us when we exited the library. He was very nice (the car was not - a 27yr old Russian Lada) but he wanted more money so he thought if he drove more places we'd pay more. I saw more of the city (which was very old - remember 331BC), falling apart, half built (nothing is complete, nothing!). Then we told him we needed to start our shift back on the ship, so he raced through town, down crazy little streets, animals all over, people walking all over the middle of the streets, people hanging out with their water pipes on the sidewalks. It was truly a hair raising and fascinating ride. LOL  Crazy!
So, I saw the students and it didn't look like they came from the streets near the port, but I also saw the standard of living on those streets. The Pearl of the Med - mmmm, I didn't see it.
