for national day, i attended a wedding in xuyi. it's known for its crawfish or chinese lobster as they call it around here. it was one of my co-workers and i was one of the few foreigners that attended. three hours outside of wuxi, it was in a small village in northern part of the province.
the wedding itself was fantastic. probably the best wedding i've been to in my entire life. unlike other chinese weddings, this one actually had a ceremony- not just a reception! and what a ceremony it was.
first off, there was an emcee. as soon as 11 o'clock rolled around, the lights in the conference room darkened. he walked onto the stage, in the middle of the spotlight that suddenly appeared on stage. said his welcome in chinese. a gold and white tuxed mickie and a matching minnie mouse run into the room, high-fiving a few people along the way. the crowd goes wild. then the emcee announced the groom, wwf-style...
the groom struts out to the screaming crowd. the lights in the room turn from white/yellow to neon pinks and greens. then the emcee announces the bride. the lights dim and fireworks explode from both sides of the stage. loud romantic late 80s/early 90s music blares suddenly and the spotlight zooms in on the back of the room. the crowd hushes and the bride waltzes into the room, singing along to the song. she stops in the middle of the aisle, inside a lace-covered pavilion. the groom rushes by her side, singing/pleading for her hand in marriage. she pretends to think about it then they start walking/boogieing up the aisle together. at this point, there's this huge light show on the stage they're heading toward.
they stop in front of the emcee who gets serious for a moment. he asks them why they should get married and how much do they love each other. both of them scream into their mikes "i love you this much" arms extending all the way out. the music swells and finally they kiss. the crowd hoots and hollers and the emcee raises his hands to calm them down.
the couple walk over to a heart-shaped champagne glass fountain to the left of the stage. they pour liquid into the glasses then light a match. the whole fountain explodes in a shower of flames then quickly die down to soft neon lights. mickie and minnie then light more fireworks to the right of the stage. the crowd oohs and aahs and finally claps and cheers when the last of the heart-shaped fireworks die down.
the lights come back on and the overflowing stacks of food stream out of the closed doors. right before our very eyes, the lazy susans in the middle of the tables fill up with big piles of delicious delicacies. and we all eat and drink like pigs for the next couple of hours. then afterward we have the best crawfish i've ever tasted in my life as dessert.
