after classes today, i crowded into the elevator with some of my students from my last class. the questions about my ethnicity have been slacking off. since a quarter of my students are repeats, i figured that the word is spreading that there's a new chinese-american teacher at web. but as soon as the elevator doors closed, the questions started.

"excuse me. where are you from?"

"america."

inevitably, that one word always starts a flurry of chinese. one student, not one of mine, refused to believe it. in chinese, he was saying that i look chinese. responding in chinese, i gave him my usual explanation. he still refused to believe it, saying my chinese is too good. some of my students agreed, nodding their heads but one student piped in, "her chinese is good but she speaks english and chinese with an american accent." the original guy blinked a few times and slowly acknowledged that fact. i translated the whole thing to christina. we left the elevator, laughing. usually people just think my weird accent is because all my family's from southern china. i'm glad she hit that nail right on the head.
