Where I stayed
Barn Hill Station Stay Broome
Read my review - 4/5 stars

Couldn't find Barn Hill Station on the map so had to settle for Broome, which is in fact 128kms south of Broome.

After a
great day spent seeing the sights of Broome, and a bit of last minute shopping, even bought myself a hat, now I look like an
absolute dag with it on, but at least it will keep the flies and sun off me
while down at the beach.

I ventured
off around 2.30pm in the direction of Port Hedland. It's not as hot as it has
been so driving is a little more comfortable than it has been.

The van is
not running smoothly and I'm not too sure that what the mechanic said about
only having one automatic transmission cooler working instead of the two, is a
good idea...or it's something else.

It took
longer than I anticipated reaching the turn off and as the sun was beginning to
set I was becoming rather apprehensive of what lurked in the bushes. Even a
bird taking flight scares me now. Finally I saw the sign and turned off the
highway to Barn Hill Station:

http://www.barnhill.com.au/index.html

It's a
cattle station that offers accommodation and is only 50m from the beach.

The only
down side is 10kms of rough road to get here, poor van was doing the 'hippy
hippy shake' all the way in... naturally I have to get back out again, so it
will be shak'n it's bootie again.

There are
three cattle fences to open and close along the way, I honestly thought I'd
taken the wrong road; it seemed to be the longest 10km ever.

I was
greeted by an elderly gentleman who asked me if I wanted power or unpowered and
as I just needed somewhere safe for the night replied 'unpowered is fine".
So he pointed me in the direction of a spot overlooking the ocean...which of
course I couldn't see as it was now dark. When I went to pay he informed me
they don't take cards and I didn’t have any money. Now, this is a problem. The
owner came over and said not to worry we could sort it out in the morning.
Whew!

The
amenities block is something else...they are made of corrugated iron, some loos
have roofs and then there are those with just stars as your roof. I opted for
the stars.

After a
quick bite I settled down to watch TV, alas reception is poor this far away
from Broome and could only get SBS, never mind at least my computer was
working...

Went off to
sleep around 9.30pm, there was a beautiful breeze blowing through the van to
cool me down. Lola was curled up at the end of my bed and Luana on the floor. I
was woken up through the night by the sound of dog biscuits being munched and
thought nothing of it...until at second glance realised Luana was still asleep
and Lola was still on the bed...bugger me if it wasn't a feral cat that had
climbed through the mosquito netting. Bit of a worry!

This morning
when I was coming back from the amenities block the elderly gentleman asked me
how I had spent the night. "Fine thanks, except for a cat that got into
the van". Yes there are quite a few of those around here he replied. Shit
not going to like that as I don't have any way of closing my back door and
surviving the heat.

But
nonetheless I have decided I will "chill out" a day here it's just a
beautiful place and the dogs will enjoy the freedom of running along the beach.

Off to check
out the "outback" showers and then it's off to the beach, see the
owner about paying and photo time.

Well, paying
is not going to be an easy task, since logging in to the computer an hour ago,
I no longer have reception on my new super duper TELSTRA pre-paid WIFI or on my
"cheapie". Honestly I give up, this is just bullshit!

So it’s off
to the beach to CHILL out and re-energise, and hope for some good Karma!

Later:

Wow! The
beach was fabulous and Luana ran wild, she ran up and down the beach, in and
out of the water while scaredy cat Lola just flinched at the idea of going
within 5m of the water. After an hour of watching Luana frolicking, it was back
to the van to recharge my camera and try the internet again…to no avail there
is still nothing.

Looks like an interesting place, feels like you could puddle around forever amongst the amazing rock formations.

Love the ocean.
