Before reaching Katherine I went through another small indigenous town called Mataranka. This was my first sighting of any alcohol restrictions which are heavily inforced throughout the NT, naturally I didn't stop there very long, only kidding...
I was in need of a loo and drove along aimlessly in search of one, finally found one near a park but thought better of it and opted for the service station. "Sorry toilets are for paying customers only", no worries mate I'll just shit on your doorstep. I didn't of course but felt like. Why is it so complicated to let people use a toilet?
Katherine was a pleasant town with music playing from speakers strategically placed along the main street, so enjoyable listening to the sounds of didgeridoos while you're shopping. At this stage of my trip I was becoming more and more annoyed at the fact that I wasn't able to connect to Telsta and called into the local store to ask for help. They were unable to assist me and couldn't figure out either, why I was with Tesltra and getting no signal. So I just drove on in the scorching heat again with my phone still not working.
And as for Optus I hadn't had any service from them since leaving Mt Isa and even there it was lousy.
From here the landscape started to change again and it was going from the scorched, parched land to the occasional trees and mountains and rock formations, so different to the red soil behind me.The soil is still red throughout the top end, but with the ever changing scenery it's not quite as noticable, amazing what a little bit of greenery can do to 'cheer' the surroundings up. A little rain wouldn't go astray up here.
