Last night was certainly our coldest night thus far! It was also the scarriest for Matt...as many of you know, he has a fear of bears (developed in recent years for unknown reasons). Upon entry to our campground we saw a sign warning that there were bears in the area, quote of the day.... "Oh that's just great...there are bears in the area". (doesn't sound funny, but it really was!)
We set up tarp city (and a fine one I might add!), layered on the clothes and snuggled up tight! It was only about 5C when we went to bed...(that's cold in Ferenheigt). This morning we started our day with a hike up Berry Moutain...aptly named for all the berries growing on it mostly bluberries and cloudberries (which they call applebake berries for some reason). Anyhow, our efforts were rewarded with spectacular views of Gros Morne and the expansive bog lands in the park.
After we packed up camp we set off to Arches Provincial Park just north of the perimeter of Gros Morne, so named for the arches formed in the rocks along the water. It was very beautiful...similar to the arches in Utah...except not red, not in a dessert and it was covered in vegetation...but definately an arch!
On our way out of the park we went for a walk through the bog to the Western Brooke Pond (apparently the cleanest water in the world) which is a land locked fjord. The walk to the pond was amazing! It was a 3Km path with boardwalks through the ponds and bogs. Along the way I was super excited to spot to of the carnivorous plants that are native to Newfoundland, the pitcher plant and the bloodwort...very exciting!
The day doesn't end there (yes, we did pack in a lot). We also saw a moose! A fabulous day in Gros Morne!
