Saturday 23rd October

I cant really tell you much more about the train journey as they were all getting very similar by now, but what i can say was that we got a big wake up call on USA's strict 'no sex before 18' rule. On the second night we got chatting to the only other people our age down in the cafe. There was a 22 year old goth girl, an 18 year old punk skater, 23 year old Marine that had gone AWOL and finally a 16 year old girl. Unbeknown to us, the Marine had been buying the 16 year old alcohol all evening, which must have worked, as by 10 pm he had persuaded her to join him 'downstairs' in the luggage cart for a 'nightcap'! Long story short, they got caught and all hell broke lose! There was even talk about stopping the train at the next unmanned station and getting the police to come aboard and arrest him. As you can imagine we found this hilarious, until the goth told us that the guy would be looking at at least 40 years+ in the nick for it (supplying a minor with alcohol with the intent for sexual relations apparently!) We still found it funny after finding this out though, so were quite disappointed when they didn't - well it would have made the journey a bit more interesting anyway!

Sunday 24th October

We got off the train at 3am very tired and eager to wash (it had now been 3 days since we last showered). Thinking it was just a short ride to Vegas we didn't mind waiting, it wasn't until we got the connecting bus and was told it was another 2 hours we started getting restless! We tried sleeping the 2 hours but to come from seats that had ample to leg room to seats Ronnie Corbet would have trouble sitting on was a nightmare.

Eventually at 5am we made it to Vegas - well Vegas Airport at least. It had taken us 43 hours of non stop travel, but we had got here and we got see the bright lights that lit up the sky for miles. In the space of 4 days we had travelled from New York to New Orleans, up to Chicago and finally down to Las Vegas. A total of about 3000 miles. We had crossed over 15 states and we needed to relax!

Because of Chicago, we booked ahead! Our knowledge of hotels in Vegas was, as you can imagine, quite limited, so when we stopped in Alberqueque, New Mexico, for an hour, we did a bit of research. Well say research, we just talked to the guy at the train ticket booking desk, but by the sounds of it, he was a bit of a Vegas regular, so we took his advice anyway! Circus Circus would be our home for the next couple of nights! When phoning up to book though we weren't quite expecting it to be so cheap - a bargain at only $70 a night ($35 ea). Although more than we were used to, we were going to have a queen size double bed each and en suite. SOLD!

Which much anticipation, we walked through the casino to the reception; yep that right, they actually make you walk through the casino to get to it! Scarily there were still people playing the slots at 5am?!

Afetr getting lost in the casino, we finally found the reception only to be told that we couldn't check in till 2pm (7 hours away). WE NEED A SHOWER! We pleaded with the receptionist but it just fell to deaf ears. The best we could do was check our bags in and have a look around the hotel. "you mean spend money in your casino" i said sarcastically!

Deciding not to lose all our money in our first hour in Veags, we checked our bags in and walked outside, not before getting lost in that stupid casino again!. It was literally 5 minutes before we noticed something. Our conversation went something like:

Matt: "Look at those 2 pissed twats"
Dan : "Funny that they look English"
Matt: "No Change there then"
Dan : " They can hardly stand up!"
Matt: "Oh its Jim!"

Now for any of you fortunate people that don't know Jim, he is a mate form home that some how managed to get into the Marines! He was in America for training, although form what we heard, most of his time was spent either firing big guns in the desert, blowing up cows or spending his 'hard earned' wages in Vegas! Good to see our tax payers money being spent appropriately!

By the sounds of it, much alcohol had been drunk, and much money lost that night - which to be fair is a usual night out with jim! After he had stopped kissing us and telling us how much he loved us he showed us where he, and 3 others were staying. Well lets just say it wasn't the ritz! He did invite us to crash for a few hours till we could check in, but the thought of 3 marines waking up and finding 2 complete strangers in their room wasn't to appealing!

So with nothing else to do we just dawdled around Vegas like Zombies, now being awake for over 24 hours! We quickly realised that if you want to be entertained in Vegas, then you have to spend money! Not what we wanted really! We did find a launderette on our travels though, and thought after 3 weeks, it might be time to our first wash!

Eventually it got to a point where every 30 minutes we would walk back to the reception, get lost in the casino again, find the reception, get told no, and to go away, walk back outside, get lost in the casino again, go and play frisbee in the car park! Finally at 12:30, they gave in and gave us our key to our room. It was like being given the key to your first home! It was here we actually ran into a couple of old friends from home. Not many of you will know them but it was James Keenan and Matthew Boswelll. They had just finished a summer at Summer camp and were travelling around the country before flying home. Sadly that was the last we saw of them so we didn't get a chance to go out. Anyway there was a small matter of getting to our room!

It was like heaven! There was 2 double queen size beds, A massive TV with Sky, Ensuite bathroom and a bath!! I hadn't had a bath since England! Although highly childish, your forgive us for spending the next 15 minutes jumping on the beds with delight like 10 year old children! Sorry but after spending 3 weeks in bunk beds, you can understand!

By the time we had unpacked, showered & washed, it had become 6pm and wasn't really worth going to bed to catch up on some sleep, Surprisingly, after we had spent an hour each in the showers. we were quite awake, and were eager to see the strip. By now Jim had awoken and was desperate to give us a tour, being the expert of the town he now was!

Jim insisted we go up the stratosphere, which for those who don't know is another tower! Although we had said no more towers, this did have the advantage of having three roller coasters at the top, so it could be a bit more interesting! They are hard to describe so click on their website to see what they look like. http://www.stratospherehotel.com/las_vegas_stratosphere_ride.html

also take a look at their new ride planned for 2005 the insanity!

We spent the next few hours being dragged to various casino's to watch Jim lose more money - which we found hilarious as both of kept winning! We called it a night at 2am when Jim was $500 down. We had been awake for god knows how many hours now, and were up 6am for the Grand Canyon Tour!
