This morning Lisa's great-uncle Age and his wife Metje took us for a walk through the old city of Alkmaar, which was completely deserted.  We then drove to Broeker Veiling, and had a look at the museum.  That was very interesting - it is a land of many many islands, where vegetables used to be grown.  They would then be transported to the vegetable market by boat and sold by way of Dutch Auction.  Now the islands have been built on instead.

After lunch we went to see some traditional windmills and a pumping station.  Again we learnt a lot about the moving of water to make more land available - a lot of the country is below sea level.  We learnt that this was started back in the 1500's!  Clever people.  We saw a windmill in use for moving water, and because it was such a windy day the parts were really moving quickly.

It rained again off and on all day and there was a cold wind.  I'm told it has been a good summer but we have just struck it badly (it has rained every day of our time in the Netherlands!)

Back in Alkmaar we backed up all our photos onto two external harddrives, so we could clear off the memory cards.  About 800 photos so far :-)  Some of those will form panoramics later on though.  We also did some washing and Lisa failed to think about the fact Matt's new red sleeping bag liner had not been washed before so put it (since it was silk) in with the woollens, ... which are now all splotchy pink.  So annoying as one merino top had been oatmeal in colour so really soaked up the red dye!  And my favourite merino tank which was blue-green is now a hideous blue-purple-ick!  The clothes that are ruined were fairly new also :-(

In the evening we went out to a Greek Restaurant for dinner.  We had never eaten Greek before but it was very nice.  We walked back to the apartment through the carnival/fair.

Hi happy travellers or should I say not so happy Matt at the mo!ment? So you got hippy tye dyed clothes at the mo! So you will both come home with dreds< Lol! Nah that's a real pain when that happens. Nice to see some of the places and things we saw back in Holland. Thank you guys for sharing this holiday with us. May the sun come out for you guys soon. Last week we had really nice weather but then we have had a few awful cold wet days, but today the sun is shinnig again and we can put the washing on the line. Yeah!
I'm absolutely full of the cold and flu at the mo, which is a real pain as I need to get rid of the cough and chest infection by Friday as I'm having a knee operation on 14 September. Well guys that's enough rambling from me. Enjoy what time you have in Holland and if you see Oma and Louise give them our love and of course say hi tio all the relations from us too. : )

I am enjoying very much all the photo's & stories of your travels. Rather envious. I'm glad that it doesn't appear that you've had any major set backs. Having a blog site is a nice way of people keeping up with your travel experiences, thanks for that. Saw the sun here for the first time since autumn. I guess you'd be keen to see it also! Cheers. Alf.

What a busy time you are both having!! Can't wait to view the 'edited' slide show next time we're south (800 photos already!!!!). I bet there are lots of laughs as you decipher the language. We're enjoying catching up with what you're doing and I in particular am jealous of the 'Sound of Music' tour. Did they let you swing in the trees? twirl in the gazebo? hide in the graveyard?
