Buenos dias!

So we got on the bus to Arequipa what was supposed to be a 13 hour overnight bus ride. It went well with lay back seats, movies, and food until we hit the small town of La Joya about an hour out of Arequipa. This was about 7 in the morning. As Matthew had mentioned in our last blog entry, there were grumblings of a strike to happen, and it turns out he had properly understood the news and there was definitely a strike going on. This meant that the road was blockaded and no one was to go any further. The police were even there to ensure this. There were hordes of locals in the middle of the street and more being brought in by the truckload to support the strike, chanting and singing and banging around water bottles filled with stones. Around 15 tour and local buses were stuck in this small town. Some gringos decided to walk through the hordes and there were illegal taxis to take them further. From what we later heard, the locals did not like this and pelted the cars with stones. The police did not even stop them. Im sure our parents will be glad to hear, although we were frustrated with hours of trip time lost, we did the safe and legal thing and stayed put with our bus. We spent our time walking the town, taking pictures, reading, visiting with other strandees and I took a nice 2 hour nap. The strike was rumored to last  24 hours from midnight of the night before (7 hours before we got there) until midnight of that night. Needless to say we were quite pleased when the locals started singing the national anthem, the strike was declared over, and all the buses started their engines at 6 pm. We finally arrived in Arequipa at 8:30.
