We picked up our third hire car today. We were expecting something like a Dodge Charger but when we got outside to pick one up we found an ugly Chevrolet Impala waiting for us. Most uncomfortable seats ever. They must be designed for heavy people with wide backsides because they were rock hard and didn't fit. The seatbelt would not tighten up on Alison and stayed loose across her legs. We drove it about 100 yards, far enough to realise it also had rubbish steering, an uncomfortable driving position and snatchy brakes. We have definitely been spoilt by the luxury of the Ford Taurus.

Thankfully they found us a Ford Edge instead. This was such a relief. Neither of us wanted to be stuck with the Impala for 18 days! The Ford Edge is a mid-sized SUV which is infinitely more comfortable and has another 3.5 litre V6 engine. The engine and gearbox are much smoother than the Mustang's. It's very heavy though so it doesn't like corners stopping in a hurry.

After leaving the hire car place, we immediately hit L.A. Memorial weekend traffic. At least the car has a decent stereo. We drove slowly down to San Diego but didn't stop anywhere on the way. The sky was mostly overcast today and all the beaches were packed with Memorial weekenders. We spent an hour or two randomly driving across San Diego. Pretty city.

We ate lunch at a marina with a view across to the tall buildings of San Diego. Matthew had Cioppino which came with large crab claws. Fiddly to eat but tasted good.

Drove through historic gas lamp district of San Diego before ending up in nearby Chula Vista for the night.
