Today we went on the Giant Dipper at Santa Cruz boardwalk. It's a wooden roller coaster like our Big Dipper except it's a little taller and reaches 55mph instead of 40mph. Wooden roller coasters are the best kind and this one is very good. It's a year younger than the Big Dipper and was built in 1924.

We got to the boardwalk before any of the rides opened so we spent half an hour or so wandering around taking in the sights. The boardwalk smells like sweets. Only half of the boardwalk was open today so we didn't stay for long.

On the way out of Santa Cruz we stumbled upon a healthy food supermarket so we stocked up on fresh supplies including some delicious olive bread and tomatoes. The drive down to Monterey is not very scenic. Again, we are really glad we drove the coast road north of San Francisco.

We ate homemade sandwiches at the harbour in Monterey and booked on to a 5 hour whale watching trip tomorrow. Monterey seems like a very nice place. So nice that we could not find a motel within budget so we drove inland to Salinas. Very heavy traffic meant that it took us about an hour and a half to drive 20 miles. Still, the motel is cheap and we've found a quicker route back to Monterey for tomorrow.
