We decided against the party on the beach in Rio that had 2 million people at it and opted for a smaller scene...with only a few thousand on the beach. Picture thousands of Brazilians, all wearing white, speaking Portuguese while counting down the minutes to 2006. As soon as the clock hit midnight the party began. We enjoyed a huge band on the beach and soaked in the culture of this country. It was a very memorable new years!

Ilha Grande has many great beaches, all white sand and with warm clean water. Our favorite was Lopes Mendes. It is very remote and you have to take a 1 hour boat ride there and then hike for 20 minutes over a hill to reach it. It is 2 miles long and has the finest white sand. It is said to be one of the prettiest beaches in all of Brazil and we would have to agree. If you ever head to Ilha Grande, this is a must!

Pretty much the theme in the rest of our time in Brazil is beaches, beaches and more beaches.
