While Matt slaved up Mt. Kilimanjaro for 6 days in below freezing temps......Amy headed to the beach to relax in 90 degree weather! We were both doing things we enjoyed and loving life. It was strange to be apart for 8 days, but after 6 months together 24 hours a day it was a refreshing time alone. I was ready to meet back up after our time apart, but enjoyed my time alone.
Zanzibar is off the coast of Tanzania around 2 hours by boat. It reminded me a mix of Hoi An, Vietnam 'combo packed' (my new favorite phrase) with the beaches of Koh Tao, Thailand. All of the buildings were white washed, the town was filled with narrow alleyways and bustling streets. My days consisted of time alone reading in my room, eating kabobs at the food stalls on the harbor and nightly sunset drinks at The Afrian House (a must if you visit Zanzibar). After 4 days in the city of Stonetown I headed up the beaches on the north shore of the island. It was such a laid back place with no cars on the road, a large concentration of cool bars/restaurants on the beach and cheap accommodations ($15). Not much to do here but read and lay in the sun: two activities that I thoroughly enjoyed.
After getting a nice tan and missing Matt each day, it was time to meet back up with my frost-bitten fingered husband back on the mainland and head to Uganda.
