Where I stayed
Meramees Hotel
Cosmopolitan Hotel
Yay, back to a country where my NZ dollar goes a long way. Time for my first stop in the Middle East starting in the city of Cairo to travel with Rupert. The 50 minute taxi from the airport to the hotel brought back all the excitement/craziness of the roads of vietnam, but this time it was at 100km/h and all cars.
The hotel we stayed at was great at only $15NZD each for the night, it was no Vietnam, but it was ten times better then the Rome accommodation. The heat here is phenomenal at a staggering 40 degrees, thankfully its a dry heat though.
The following day we headed to the Cosmopolitan Hotel, which would be where our Middle Eastern tour for the next 17 days started. The first day of the tour consisted of having a meeting and passing over important information like emergency contacts (mum), so if say a camel was to trample me, they would know who to inform.
We got straight into the iconic landmarks on day two with a trip to the Pyramids and Sphinx of Giza, backed up with a trip to a Papyrus Museum and the Cairo Museum. While at the Pyramids, Rups and I crawled through 1 meter high passageways to the tomb inside the second Pyramid. We were surprised to find everyone with cameras in the tomb as we were told it was not allowed. We obviously have a lot to learn of this country and its rules.
After the full packed day it was time to get on a 13 hour night train to take us to Aswan located up the Nile.
