Ecuador's third city, after the largest, Guayaquil, and the capital, Quito. And very nice, it is, too. Surrounded by Inca ruins, cloud forests and moorlands, the bus journey from Guayaquil is incrediby picturesque. Up, up, up, into the Andes, above clouds on hills, past waterfalls, rivers and cows. Lots of cows.
Guayaquil itself was OK, albeit a bit big. I was given some recommendations before I left, one of which was "Guayaquil is a dump, and quite dangerous". Rather harsh. The Malecon 2000, by the river is great, and the view from the top of Santa Ana is impressive. But, overall, it's too much like any other big city. Birmingham for example, but not as much of a dump as the midlands town (or as dangerous...)
