We have spent the last seeral days on the tiny tropical island of Gili Air. It is right off the coast of Lombok, an island just to the east of Bali. Getting to the island included a boat ride in the dark - a magical trip under brilliant stars. The boat did not have lights other than a flashlight held by one of the drivers that was mostly off except in our final approach to the island. We are staying in a lovely cottage with thached room, balcony with hammock, and a stone-surfaced showed with a palm tree that is open to the sky. It is in a garden full of flowers and palm trees as well as noisy chickens and other birds, frogs, lizards, and cicadas.

Fresh fruit and fruit juice for every meal, and delicious Sasak Indonesian food (although the service is unbeleivably slow), usually in a thatched platform right on the beach! Mostly Matt is taking a course to get his SCUBA Open Water Diver certification. Even the most basic skills training is done in the ocean - making it more challenging than Alison's course many years ago which started in a pool. Already we have seen sea turtles, puffer fish, nudibranches, and squid, as well as many colorful fishes, coral, and sea stars. Alison is doing a refresher course to get her back to speed after 8 years of not diving.

The time here has gone by quickly and we will be leaving tomorrow to meet up with Alison's friend Karrie, who works in Indonesia. We will be heading for the island of Flores, further to the east.

Some of you may have heard about the earthquake in Yogjakarta on Saturday, which caused significant destruction and the loss of over 3,000 lives. We are not close enough to have been affected by this but had been planning to go there as our last stop on the trip in about 10 days. We may have to change those plans, depending on the extent of the destruction. We'll keep this updated every few days.

Best to you all!
ps - the internet connection here is super slow, so the photos will have to wait. Sorry!
