Last weekend, Anna and I thought it would be a good idea to pack the bike up and have a practice camping trip.We decided on Great Yarmouth in Norfolk as it seemed a good and a tacky place to go as any, so we packed the bike up to high heaven and took off. We only went for a night but as it was a practice for the actual trip it was a good idea to take the stuff that we were going to take with us to Europe. We packed all the camping gear: stove, cutlery, plates, mugs, the fact that I forgot to pack the saucepan was slightly irritatinmg and so we couldn't cook anything anyway. I think Anna was secretly pleased by this as we had dinner in a local pub rather than bland pasta in a campsite.
We are using some self-inflating mattresses and normal sleeping bags as we camp around Europe - I slept fairly well that night whereas Anna said she was aching all over and didn't sleep well at all. This worried me a little as we were proposing to do this for 6 weeks. Later we did agree to spend at least 2 nights a week in a hostel, just so we can give our backs a "break" and sleep on something soft.
The trip was a success and all the camping equipment we have recently bought worked well and to expectation. More importantly the bike rode absolutely fine and coped with the extra weight perfectly. The only difference I found was that it was slightly more tricky to handle going round small roundabouts, but this is expected due to the extra weight.
On the way home we stopped at a McDonalds for a cup of tea and it was great to see the car park full of bikes as loads of people were out on their "Sunday Blast". We sat and had a cup of tea in the car park when one of the bikers came over and asked "Have you been to a rally of something?". I replied with "No, just had a night's camping in Yarmouth". He then looked at us and the bike as if we were crazy. I had to explain that it was a practice run for a European tour to justify having so much stuff for just one night. He said it sounded great and wished us luck.
Time is flying and its now only about 5 weeks until departure. We have most things we need, I just need to get the bike serviced and to get some small pieces and we should be ready.
Can't wait!
