Catching our bus at 6pm from San Agustin heading 4 hours south back to San Juan, from where we'd only arrived the day before, was a pretty frustrating experience. We were due to arrive in San Juan at 10.15pm, and had no idea of whether we'd be able to get a bus out of there heading North, and if so where exactly would it take us, and if not, where would we find to sleep that night??? The trip itself was bearable, despite sitting at the back over the engine - and the air conditioning barely working - and a baby with hyperactive lungs sitting the seat in front of us.

The plan on arriving in San Juan was for Kat to collect the bags whilst Matt ran up and down the platform to see if any other them were leaving imminently for anywhere useful. Our intended destination was Salta about 14 hours north of San Juan and only a few hours from the Bolivian border.

The bus pulled in on time, and so it was that Matt, running up the platform happened upon a lovely sleeper bus that was literally about to set off terminating at Salta. In frantic and extremely poor Spanish Matt found out where the ticket office was, got the driver to promise not to leave for 5 minutes, picked up the tickets, ran back to the driver and got him to promise us another couple of minutes, ran back to collect Kathryn and the luggage and gratefully embarked. Serendipity, it appears, favours the prepared mind...

A couple of glasses of wine later (for Matt at least) and we were nicely settling down to snooze when our conducter came up to offer us a choice of either Whisky or Champagne. We were very happy indeed with this bus!

News of Salta proper to follow...
