We had had beautiful weather so far in Patagonia and were starting to wonder what the fuss about the ‘un-forgiving environment’ was about. We were quite annoyed that we had only taken the one backpack between us and left all our summer clothes in Buenos Aires for when we returned. We were almost hitting 30 degrees most days. On one of these halcyon days in El Chalten we went for a trek to a nearby glacier when we got caught in a snow storm and were biting from the renowned patagonian winds. El Chalten is beautiful however especially this time of year with the leaves turning red and orange with Autumn. Glaciers and mountains abound and the Fitzroy mountain range keep a watchful eye over the town / village. Some days we couldn’t see the mountains as they were covered with cloud but they were a great sight when they re-appeared as by magic. You could spend much more time than we did in El Chalten exploring the area. The great thing about El Chalten from our perspective is that a lot of the trekking routes are do-able within a day so you can freeze the day away seeing some beautiful natural scenery but then come back to a warm shower and bed in the evening.
