Hi folks,
We left Varenna on an early train with the plan to spend the entire day in Milan prior to moving on to Bologna. We started the day at the Duomo, Milan's main cathedral and the fourth largest church in the world (built to accommodate the entirety of Milan's population of around 40,000 people when construction began in 1386. It was spectacular. Words fail to describe it (inside and out). I drew some funny looks using a wad of Kleenex as a makeshift tripod--but it was totally worth it.
We then crossed the Piazza del Duomo to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele--imagine Cleveland's Old Arcade on a much grander scale.
Behind the Galleria is the world famous Scala Opera House (simpler than we had expected) and a small square dominated by a statue of Leonardo da Vinci.
We spent the next couple of hours at the Brera Art Gallery which houses Italian masterpieces from the 12th through 19th centuries. Near the Brera is Sforza Castle built in the late 1300s but named for the Sforza family which later inhabited it. It was an interesting site in the middle of Milan's golden quad of boutiques. The highlight of the visit was seeing an unfinished Michelangelo Pietà.
More gelato.
More travelpod posting.
Well, we've got to catch the train to Bologna. More posting soon.
Love,
Mike and Steph
