We traveled to Hideaways Beach this morning, which is located in the Princeville Resort.  Mike's place at The Cliffs is located in Princeville.  Hideaways Beach is reached by trekking down a very steep trail, which has rope railings, muddy steps and a downward climb that had you hanging on each step of the way! We had made a visit to this beach in 2006, and knew how steep it was.  So we had our water trekking shoes, since flip flops made it very difficult since you can slip so much.  We made it down OK, and found then snorkeling at this remote and small beach really great!  It had a reef, fish that swam right up to you, and a sandy bottom in sections, so you could rest from snorkeling.  We saw lots of fish and even an eel!

We made the arduous trek back up the trail and had lunch at the house.  We grilled up some hot dogs we bought during our hurricane Flossie scare and planned the afternoon.  We decided to try another hike to Secret Beach.  I soon realized it was a mistake to do two tough hikes a couple of hours apart!  When we made the even tougher climb down to Secret Beach, the surf was too high and the swells were to strong to swim.  So up we went, again!

We returned to Moloa'a Bay for the afternoon, and enjoyed the shade and swim.  We had dinner in Hanalei overlooking Bali Hai Mountain, had ice cream and returned to the house for charades.  Tomorrow, the plan is for Bob and Maryellen to hike the Kalalau Trail overlooking the Na Pali Coast while the kids snorkel again at Ke'e Beach.  Then, the postponed scuba session is planned in the afternoon.

The Hawaiian Canoe Association is holding its state wide competition on Saturday in Hanalei.  The first time it's been in Kauai since 2006 -- lucky us!  We saw some of the canoes being brought in the the other night.  We will probably miss the races since the traffic is supposed to be awful -- like  10 am in dc!
