Mary's Impressions:
Continuing on our journey to catch the fall colours on the U.S. Eastern Coast, we made our way to the state of Maine also known as Vactionland. The name is an appropriate description for the US state that draws thousands of vacationers who visit its many lakes, rivers, long coastline (about 5,000 miles) or go camping and hiking in its forest (about 17 million acres of forestland).  Our main purpose however in coming to Maine was to visit with my cousin Paula and her husband Scot.  It had been about 10 years since we last saw each other.  It's incredible how time quickly slips away.  We all seem to get caught up with the things life throws at us.  It is however great when we can stop a moment with what we’re doing and reconnect again.  I was really looking forward to seeing Paula again and catching up.

Staying with family, it’s a chance to slow down and just hang out.  We had some long walks with Paula & Scot and their dog – Scamp.  On some of these walks, their neighbor Marty accompanied us with her dog Cubby.  Since Jeff and I are thinking of getting a dog once we’re finished with our travels, this was good practice for us.  We also had a chance to explore some of Maine’s cute and quaint towns located on the Mid-Coast.  Visiting the towns of Camden, Rockport, Rockland, Belfast, Bar Harbor and Lincolnville, it was hard to decide which town I liked the most.  Each town had something unique to offer the visitor whether it was its shops, restaurants and/or marina.

My highlight of the trip was our visit to Acadia National Park and going to the summit of Cadillac Mountain (1,530 feet).  Standing on the summit, we were able to take in the fall colours of the vegetation on the mountain and the valleys below.  Truly breathtaking!  Another highlight was visiting Sand Beach.  Standing on the shores of the beach watching surfers catch the waves, I thought of our time at Tofino, BC when we were there in February watching people do the same thing on the Pacific Ocean.  I love the combination of water surrounded by mountains.  Water, alluring but scary for me (I don’t know how to swim), the mountains for the spirit and mystery that this terrain holds, I need to climb them.  Coming to Cadillac Mountain and visiting Acadia National Park in low season is the best time to visit the area.  Most of the roadways within the park are one way.  It is probably not the most enjoyable experience driving on these roads with heavy traffic and lots of tourists.  This is one advantage to travelling in off season – we have most places to ourselves.

We couldn’t leave Maine without sampling one seafood item that this area is known for.  Jeff and I both had lobster.  We feel that there is something different to eating lobster in the places close to where it is caught.  Jeff was able to break and eat his lobster cleanly without having to wear the lobster bib (I think that he really disappointed the server who wanted to help Jeff put it on).  The lobster was served with some butter – delicious!!  Life doesn’t get any better than this.

We had a great time in Maine.  I know that we’ll be back again sometime soon!
