Mary's Impressions:
Jeff and I are back on the road again. Unfortunately our plan to visit Newfoundland and Labrador will not happen this time around.  In looking at our options, we missed the best time to visit this picturesque province (re: things are starting to shut down with the colder weather approaching – so sad!).  We will make it to Newfoundland and Labrador one day – this is a certainty!!

Instead we are taking a road trip through Eastern US to head to The Gaspésie or Gaspé Peninsula (the peninsula along the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec).  We'll be coming back from The Gaspésie via Quebec and Ontario.

We woke up to start our day with heavy rain and fog.  Hopefully this weather will not be an indication of the type of driving conditions we will have throughout our road trip to Eastern US and Canada.  Our first stop was the town of Lake Placid, New York (the site of the Winter Olympics for 1932 and 1980).  The first time I came to Lake Placid was with Jeff when we were first dating.  Jeff had been to Lake Placid numerous times for hiking and skiing trips with friends.  He was bringing me here for us to do some skiing at Whiteface Mountain.  I remember at the time feeling that the village and its mountains were very dreamlike – miles of forest, mountains and a lovely lake – a very romantic escape.

Coming into the village today, it seemed like time has stood still.  The village is as it was when I first came here so many years ago.  The town’s buildings on the Main Street all constructed in a consistent Adirondack style (clapboard siding) – quaint and cozy.  Mirror Lake was so calm.  The views off the lake reflected the mountains and landscape making it hard to tell where the real image finished off and the reflection took over.

The sunshine was also trying hard to fight its way through the clouds – perhaps some sun and clear skies for our morning hike tomorrow we’re hoping.  We walked a bit to stretch our legs and then headed to our hotel to grab some dinner and get settled for more driving tomorrow to New Hampshire – to view the sights of White Mountain.
