EMRI is the Call 108 (U.S equivalent of 911) emergency system that includes the ambulance system. This is a totally free system - including the cost of the phone call.
EMRI Website
For those who would like to see an excellent presentation the EMRI emergency system - click on this link and go to about 20 minutes into the video - after Raju provides an overview - which I also highly recommend. This video is over two years old and most of the numbers have subsequently doubled.
This is a most amazing, state of the art call center and ambulance system. Ambulances are all over the State of Andrha Prudesh (AP) and are tracked through the GPS tracking system in the EMRI headquarters which allows call center operators to call upon the closest ambulance.. Calls are answered within two rings. EMRI winds up accepting 5% of the people who apply to be a part of this center and then provides in depth training. If the situation is critical, doctors in the center are immediately brought into the call to oversee the process from before the ambulance arrives through entry into the hospital. The EMRI also takes phone calls for police support (50% of all calls) and fire (5% of all calls) with the 45% balance being medical calls.
This system, started by Satyam in AP has now been replicated in 18 other Indian States and is being expanded throughout India.
