Where I stayed
I had the great privilege of having two hours with Mr. C. S. Reddy, Chief Exectutive Officer of APMAS and Think Tank and Consulting Group focused on Self Help Groups in India.
C S Reddy is one of the most respected individuals in the field of Self Help Groups in India.
Self Help Groups are the largest vehicle to provide capital that allows poor borrowers to lift themselves out of poverty. SHG's are driven by the Indian Government and NABART - the Central Bank of India, who, often with state governments promote and subsidize these loans.
If you are interested in details of this program - you can find it by reading this interview of C S Reddy.

I am finding SHG's complex and difficult to understand and vary widely depending up NGO's that may be putting these together and the states that they are located.
I am hoping to be able to put together a paper comparing Microfinance Institutions, Self Help Groups and Cooperatives - after I return, but for now I am in the learning stage.
