KK is the key entry/exit point for Sabah and is definitely on the main backpackers trail with lots of bars and restaurants and (obviously) backpackers.

We’d booked into a really nice backpackers lodge where we relaxed for three days while our legs started to recover (for the first two days we picked our way down the streets avoiding kerbs as it was so painful getting up and down!). After the mountain we were in serious need of their excellent laundry service, 10RM (£2) for a wash, clothes returned the same day.

On the second day we went to the very popular beach at Sapi island by fast water taxi and watched people climbing and swimming on the coral despite signs prohibiting it. Very frustrating that we’d had to pay a conservation tax to go on to the island and yet no one bothered to enforce the signs at all; one day Malaysia will rue this blasť attitude to their natural heritage when all of the coral is dead. There were lots of fish here which tended to swim disconcertingly straight at you because so many people feed them each day.
At the beach we also bumped into Cornelia again looking very sunburned (blonde hair, blue eyes and she’d been on the beach the day before mid-day in the equatorial sun).

On our last day in Malaysia, our legs and stomachs still not quite recovered from the mountain, we wandered to an air-conned shopping mall for our final roti-canai lunch before sharing a taxi with Cornelia to the airport for our late flight to Jakarta in Indonesia.
