We flew up to Kota Kinabalu (KK for a very reasonable amount, RM226 (39 pounds) for the two of us. This saved us a lot of time and transfers of buses. We’d stopped for a night in KK just as a pit stop and next morning shipped out on the express bus to Sandakan with the purpose of finding a couple of nights at the Kinabatangan River where there was good reports of wildlife spotting. In particular we wanted to see Hornbills (birds with a big beak) as we hadn’t seen them in Sarawak.

We met a nice Dutch couple to share a taxi into the centre of Sandakan and as they hadn’t booked any accommodation they came with us to ours (I’d been super efficient and booked ahead this time!) But it was full and we had the last room. Nice Chinese place, clean and flat screen T.V. & DVD, free films – Martyn v. happy!

Sandakan has seen better days (well actually I’ve no proof of that) it was just, well a bit minging! The haze had set in – a seasonal occurrence that’s said to be due to “hot spots”- burning the jungle to clear for planting. Malaysia blames Indonesia for this as they have far more “hot spots” than Malaysia does. But it meant that the air in Santabong was acrid (extremely unpleasant) and the views out across the bay were of a hazy island that you could only just make out.

With nothing much to do in Sandakan we went for afternoon tea at the “English Tea House”! We adapted this out of place tradition to suit the climate and I had fruit salad and M had an ice cream milk shake!

Anyway, after some research around town we found that the river was only possible by booking a package and it appeared really quite expensive. Our hotel offered a cheaper option and so we opted for that…some slight concerns over what the standards might be but we thought we’d go for it anyway…..
