Very gray morning but a good breakfast in the lounge overlooking the Pacific. The weather forecast wasn't good so we set off south to try and get some better weather. After a short while we took this coast road and found an overlook where we had the very, very good luck to at least see whale spouts some way out at sea near some rocks. Whales rarely jump out of the sea so these was the best we were likely to get.

We headed off and found Newport which was very pretty (and we visited our favourite Wal-Mart) - just past the town the sun broke out and we pulled into a State Park (South Beach) where we walked along the beach. There were a bunch of surfers in the car-park with a great collection of dogs.

We were feeling pretty good at this point but listeners....after Newport the Oregon coast kinda loses it. We were hoping to stay at Florence - but all the coast appears to be owned by private citizens. The town was very tacky and the hotels nothing special.
We drove on with lovely sunny weather, albeit that it was low 60s outside. We eventually got to Coos Bay - which is a dump but we needed to find somewhere - Motel 6 as it turns out. It's OK nothing special. It was still very sunny outside and we couldn't face 8 hours in our room - so we went for a walk. There were some nice houses off the 101 up the hill but really the place is a dump.

Evening meal was a Dominos pizza and an excellent bottle of Fetzer that we'd picked up at Wal-Mart for $6.
