We got out of Hermiston without any regrets and joined I-84 West for 180 miles along the Columbia River - albeit that as it is dammed every 30 miles it is massively wide. There are hills either side so I guess they filled the flood plain. There is also a train track that runs alongside the road and seemed to have plenty of traffic on it.
We stopped at The Dalles dam and met Pete who was 60ish and really nice guy. They have a exhibition which talks about the pros and cons of the dam.
We got to Portland and found the hotel very easily. It is top class. Went for an outside hot-tub and met an American lady (35?) who is married to a Brit and has lived in Aylesbury for the last 4 years. She originally comes from near Denver but now prefers UK.
Excellent meal one junction down I-5 in a micro-brewery where MJ got one of the sampler deals - 4 small beers of different completions plus a jambalaya.
