Today we were hoping for a better day weather wise than yesterday. Unfortunately the prediction was for cold and rain. Our bike tour began in the town of Schlogen (slue gun) which is 75 minutes from Passau. We kept our fingers crossed as Carolyn and I began our 18 mile ride to Ashbach. We would follow a bike trail that ran parallel with the Danube.
The bike/car trail was flat and we zipped through the villages of Inzell, and Kobling before we arrived in Aschach (ash ha) an hour and three quarters later. There we stopped for lunch and wandered the town. We had lucked out as it had not rained, but the weather was cold and damp and our finger tips were cold throughout our ride. We did have gloves, but they didn't seem to help much.
Instead of continuing for another 18 miles we opted to take the van to Ottensheim which would give us the opportunity of walking around the town for a few hours. Not that there was much to see, but during our exploration we were walking along when a garage door opened up. We spotted a couple who were loading their cart with miniature apples which they were taking to market. We asked if we could take their picture and before we knew it they were giving us samples of their produce. They invited us to see their garden and told us they also made apple cider. We were asked into their home for a drink, but we declined as we had to meet the group. It was the highlight of the day.
From Ottensheim we were transported by motor coach for two hours to our new hotel which was in the quaint town of Weissenkirchen. VBT's dinner tonight was in the hotel's wine cellar. It was served family style and the dinner and wine were excellent. Various meats, pasta and chicken were served, as was a fabulous local wine. Every member of our group goes out of their way to be friendly, as do our tour leaders. So far every VBT sponsored meal has been excellent. Tomorrow promises to be an extra special full day.
