Ten hours of sleep certainly does wonders for the body. I think we've finally adjusted to the five hour time difference. The weather forecast for today calls for a mostly cloudy day with rain starting in the early evening and ending tomorrow morning. Hopefully the weather will hold out for most of the day.
Unfortunately Carolyn's camera is not working. The live screen and playback are not functioning. We stopped by the local camera store in Hailsham only to discover that the camera was also not able to take any photos. It will have to be returned to Canon to be repaired, but how disappointing to have it happen when you're on vacation.
Our first stop of the day was the town of Battle where the most famous battle in English history took place in the year 1066, The Battle of Hastings. From there it was on to the town of Bodiam, where Carolyn had her experience visiting a medieval castle. I've visited many castles in the past, but this was the first one that was surrounded by an actual moat. We felt like we took a step back in time. This is one of Britain's most picturesque castles.
For lunch we headed for the ancient town of Rye. I was last here three years ago, and had such good memories that I wanted to return so that Carolyn could have the same experience. Lovely cobbled lanes, the oldest hotel in England, The Mermaid and homes that had been maintained throughout time. I know it all sounds great, but when the temperature dropped ten degrees into the low 40's and the wind gusts made it feel like it was in the 20's, my bubble was burst. Oh, did I mention that it started to rain again!
We had a very nice lunch at The Apothecary and continued our walk around Rye, which once again is a beautiful town well worth seeing rain or shine.
The last stop before we headed back to Hailsham was Winchelsea, where we visited its beautiful church. For dinner we returned to Alfriston to have dinner at The George Inn. The building dates back to 1397. What a treat! David, Sheila and Carolyn had seafood linguine with mussels, scallops and crayfish. I had a char-grilled Rib-eye steak on colcannon mash with shallot sauce. For starters we shared two dishes - whole baked Camembert studded with garlic and rosemary with toast and Crudités? The second starter was Crayfish, crab and avocado terrine. For dessert we shared Banofee pie which is made with bananas topped with toffee. The second dessert was a chocolate and walnut brownie served with ice cream and chocolate sauce. To say we ate well would be an understatement. By the way, it didn't rain.

have fun!!
Enjoy! Tell Carolyn to just wear sneakers & be practical .
I love that Carolyn went for the visual look over practical - sooooo my kind of gal. You rock, Carolyn. I wlll buy you new shoes - you just keep looking good. As to your days on the south shore of the UK - I keep looking for Portsmouth or Portsworth or whatever that port was where the casions ( concrete blocks) took off across the channel to form the muulberry ports at Dunkirk - Ah, the desserts sound like heaven. I continue to love our trip to the UK ( See how it has become OUR trip?) My love to you both. I am getting the fever - We have started to build which may be the needed stopper, but your trip is aging me on to say let's just do one of these great trips with Carolyn and Marty ( ....not to worry - I am pretty much all talk - notice the "pretty much") I love this blog! Jane
